Do you ever randomly remember an actor from a favorite vintage film and wonder “what ever happened to _____ _______?” or is ______ _________ still working on-screen?
In 1992 I was 20-years-old. I was a biracial Black man in Minneapolis who wrestled with young adulthood, shallow self-esteem and questions about being mixed race while Black. Being very introverted, movies had an outsized influence on how I thought and understood the world.
I remember an independent film called “Where the Day Takes You” from 1992. I saw it on VHS. It was about a loose group of homeless teens and 20-somethings who were trying to figure their grown-up lives, and survival on the streets of Los Angeles.

Struggling to decide who I was or would be as an adult, I guess I saw something in the struggling characters. The characters, especially the leads, King and Heather, are multi-faceted The characters appealed to me although the one brown-skinned character had meager screen time. The rareness of brown- and Black-lead movies during the 1990s made me get used to settling for watching status quo white movies.
Dermot Mulroney, as King, and Lara Flynn Boyle, as Heather, lead the ensemble cast. Their roles were fully-drawn and flawed in interesting and relatable ways.
A lonely bachelor in 1992, the sweetness of how King and heather find love appealed to me. Rather than rapidly having sex or King rushing her, he lets them get to know each other day-in day-out before having sex. As a young adult that kind of romance met an ideal of how I would ideally find a girlfriend.
It’s hard to believe that “Where the Day Takes You” came out almost 35 years ago! That in the era of video stores and when only the wealthy having cellular phones!

In my 50s maybe I’m the strange one who remembers movies from 30 years ago and wonder what those actors are doing today? The films you enjoyed in young adulthood leave marks on your psyche.
Viewers haven’t seen Mulroney or Boyle in any well-publicized projects recently. That said according to imdB, he has seven credits from 2025. He is working. Maybe seeing his work is a matter of catch as catch can? And according to that same source, Ms. Boyle has credits from 2023 and then 2020 and earlier. For whatever reason she has worked less and less recently.
Fond memories of movies can provide some comfort in your middle adulthood.
