Do you Watch, or Read more to Distract, or Nourish Yourself?

Given the WGA/SAG AFTRA labor strike, As a humanities geek, I wonder how probable it is that those with frequent video-watching habits will remember and act on the joy of reading books?

I’m peculiar. Raised by a reader, and influenced greatly by an eldest brother who was a renowned scholar, to be as articulate as he is became a goal by age 19. And as a shy, introverted boy, TV was what I too oft glued myself to!

Only in my late 30s, after my scholar brother nudged me, did I decide that a reading habit was important.

According to research via AI for nonpartisan facts, “social media is a major source of distraction and can hinder users from focusing on educational activities”. and “the share of Americans who report not reading any books in the past 12 months is higher today than it was nearly a decade ago.”

On the other hand, about 64% of American adults say they have read a book in the past 12 months.” “The average number of books finished per year by American adults is 5.38 books.” The gravity of national and local news stories can dissuade adults from reading as a way to develop themselves. 

As ever more and too many adults, who could chose tactical priorities to maintain or improve their knowledge of the world, did so. Understandably a phalanx after long workdays choose the shallow ilk of “reality” shows to unwind. We adults oft mae choices for convenience or ease. 

In middle age, ambitious and goal-oriented and a sometime daily reading habit and decent impulse control,…I’m very different from those who grew up with the Web, and mobile as ubiquitous.
